It is one of the seven regions of Portugal, made up of just one sub-region with the same name and 16 municipalities, which are divided into 67 parishes. It is limited to the north by the Alentejo region, to the east by the Spanish region of Andalusia and to the south and west by the Atlantic Ocean.
Portimão
Portimão was a prehistoric settlement, a Phoenician, Greek and Carthaginian trading post. It became well known to the Romans due to its excellent port.
Lagoa
The history of Lagoa dates back to ancient times, with traces of Roman and Moorish occupation. During the Middle Ages, the city prospered as a center of commerce and culture.
Silves
In Silves, the wars between liberals and absolutists had an important local figure in the region. However, the city has seen growth in the cork industry, as well as in all commerce.
Lagos
King D. Sebastião elevated Lagos to the category of city in 1573, making it the seat of a bishopric and capital of the Algarve. Some historians believe that Lagos was elevated to city status in 1540, during the reign of D. João III.
