Portimão was a prehistoric settlement, a Phoenician, Greek and Carthaginian trading post. It became well known to the Romans due to its excellent port.
Portimão

It is a Portuguese city in the district of Faro, region and sub-region of the Algarve.
The city center is located approximately 2 km from the sea and is an important center for fishing and tourism.
Simultaneously with Silves and Alvor, Portimão was a small fishing center that in 1290 the Knights of the Order of Santiago conquered from the Muslims.
A close relationship was established between fishing and the port of Portimão, which continues today. It is not uncommon for tourists to seek out the unique flavor of grilled sardines eaten on the old pier in Portimão, where they eat them simply washed in sea water and roasted on a charcoal grill with a little salt.
Currently, Portimão is the 3rd port nationally (just behind Lisbon and Funchal), which receives the most passengers from cruise ships, thus reinforcing quality tourism in a municipality characterized by mass tourism.
